Ever wonder what it’s like to be a cook in a busy restaurant? Are you thinking about going after your dream and becoming a celebrity chef? The industry has its pluses, for sure, but a very small percentage of the population is NOT cut out for life in the commercial kitchen.
Reason #1 – MULTITASKING. If you have a hard time managing two or three things at once, this job will kill you. A real life example as follows: a twelve burner stove full of sauté dishes, steaks on the grill, fish in the oven, and appetizers under the broiler – all going out at a specific time.
Reason #2 – LATE NIGHTS. If you’re not a night person, it won’t take long for you to despise the restaurant industry. While your spouse or friends are at work from 9-5, you’re getting ready for work at 3ish for the dinner shift. And by the time you’re finished, they’re all in bed.
Reason #3 – BENDING KNEES. If you have weak knees, life behind the line will be torture. Imagine bending down to your reach-in a couple hundred times a night. It’s a HUGE part of the job.
This post isn’t meant to scare you but to inform you. If you find that this lifestyle is indeed for you, then nothing is better. For those of us that do love it – the fast pace, the chef yelling orders, the smells, the late night parties, the satisfaction of creating a killer dish – all contribute to loving the job.
